The North Beach District of San Francisco is situated on the east side of the San Francisco peninsula, north of the Financial District and south of Telegraph Hill.  It was founded by immigrants from Italy who helped establish the fishing industry.  Their legacy included some great Italian restaurants, cafes and bakeries. 

During the last half-century, North Beach became a magnet for artists and writers.
